Cikha, Zogam
On March 4, 2026, a joint team from the ZRA-EC and the Zogam Administration / ZVC conducted a field inspection of a public water source and its surrounding areas. During the inspection, the team found extensive poppy cultivation in the vicinity of the shared water source.
In response, a formal warning was issued to the Suanghoih village chief, instructing that no further poppy cultivation or related activity should take place, especially around the public water source. The joint team further stated that if such activity continues, and the village leadership is aware of it but fails to report or prevent it, responsibility and accountability will rest with the local authority concerned.
This action forms part of the ongoing and progressive campaign by the Zogam defense force and local administrative authorities to confront and discourage poppy cultivation across Zogam. The campaign is not merely punitive in nature; it is a preventive and protective effort aimed at preserving human dignity, public health, environmental integrity, food security, lawful community life, and the future of younger generations.
Poppy cultivation is not harmful only to a single village or one local area. Its consequences extend far beyond local boundaries. It contributes to the spread of drug dependency, criminal exploitation, social instability, family breakdown, insecurity, and long-term public suffering. Where narcotic-linked cultivation is allowed to grow, communities often face greater poverty, violence, corruption, and the erosion of moral and social order. For this reason, the issue must be understood not only as a local concern but as a serious humanitarian and societal concern affecting humanity at large.
The protection of public water sources is especially critical. Water is a shared community resource essential for life, health, agriculture, and daily survival. Activities that endanger public water areas, undermine local well-being, or expose communities to unlawful narcotics-related practices must be addressed with seriousness and urgency.
The Zogam defense force’s continued action against poppy cultivation reflects a broader commitment to community safety, responsible governance, environmental stewardship, and the defense of the common good. Such measures are necessary to ensure that Zogam remains a land where public resources are protected, harmful cultivation is discouraged, and the welfare of the people is placed above short-term illegal gain.
All village leaders, local authorities, and community members are therefore urged to cooperate fully in reporting, preventing, and eliminating poppy cultivation, especially in and around public water sources, residential areas, and other shared community spaces.
The inspection further underscored the importance of protecting public health and safety, and that the continued safeguarding of such actions remains a shared duty of both leadership and the public.
ZRA-EC and ZVC reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the land, water, and well-being of the people through responsible oversight and coordinated action against harmful practices in the Zomi land.
